Under general supervision, the Economic Development Specialist provides a high level of customer service to existing and future business. The Specialist supports the City’s economic development goals by supporting business retention and expansion efforts, assisting in the coordination and tracking of development-related inquiries, and fostering collaboration with internal departments and external partners. This position manages the flow of development cases from initial inquiry through pre-development coordination and serves as a consistent point of contact for the City’s business community. The Specialist provides regular updates to the Economic Development Director.

Essential Job Functions

- Serves as a contact for major commercial/retail companies participating in the business retention and expansion (BRE) program. Conduct visits, meetings and grow business community relationships with the City.
- Follows-up on routine economic development inquiries and requests for information.
- Manages, tracks, and follows through on all development-related cases from initial business inquiry through development coordination.
- Maintains a comprehensive case tracking system and database of all business inquiries, including updates and follow-ups.
- Takes initiative to check on the status of ongoing development efforts and coordinate with internal departments to ensure progress.
- Assists in developing and executing a proactive strategy that promotes business retention and expansion across all industry sectors, including but not limited to developing collateral to share and updating data on the economic development dashboards.
- Analyzes and monitors the City’s existing business mix; identify demands and surplus in good and services and create strategy for recruiting.
- Stays informed on local, regional, and national economic trends and incorporate relevant insights into business support strategies. Attend and/or view City Council meetings.
- Maintains relationships with business owners, site selectors, and economic development stakeholders including the Broken Arrow Chamber and the Broken Arrow Economic Development Corporation.
- Maintains a working knowledge of all active and planned development activity in the City, county, and region.
- Creates and produces a marketing and communication plan for business retention and recruitment efforts, including site visits, outreach events, and networking.
- Prepares and organizes data, reports, and presentation materials for internal use, City Council, and for external stakeholders.
- Supports the Director with presentations to City leadership and community partners as needed.
- Represents the department in meetings or public events in the Director’s absence as requested.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
