FLSA Status: Non-exempt
Under general supervision, identifies, locates, and marks underground utilities, updates records, and assists with the development of maps, the City’s Geographic Information System (GIS) and other electronic data.
*This position performs duties deemed to be “safety sensitive" and is therefore subjected to random drug testing under the City’s policies*
Essential Job Functions

- Read and understand utility maps, prints, and aerial imagery to assist in identification of underground utility assets.
- Prioritize work activities by reviewing all locate requests to determine travel route and timelines.
- Locate and pinpoint underground utilities using a Vivax vLoc-5000 locator and a variety of other electronic detection equipment in the designed manner.
- Mark the location of underground utility assets on roadways, private property, and other locations, as appropriate and needed, using required spray paints and flags.
- Utilize the MyLocator3 app to configure the locator, perform data transfers including timestamp, GPS coordinates, depth measurements, notes entered at time of the locate and software updates for the locator.
- Maintain inventory of locating and marking supplies, flags, paint, and batteries for electronics.
- Assist in the administration, sorting, filing and follow-up of underground utility locate requests utilizing the OKIE811 member portal.
- Communicates with utility managers, crews, homeowners, and contractors discussing locate issues and resolving questions or conflicts regarding locate requests and marking of lines.
- Respond in a timely manner to remarking requests and emergency requests for assistance.
- Performs GPS field data collection including GPS equipment setup and configuration.
- Convert data collected from field operations into GIS database.
- Assists with update of maps and data regarding locations of underground utility systems in ArcGIS Online and Portal.
- Edits and updates the City’s Geographic Information System (GIS) data to ensure quality, completeness, and accuracy of information.
- Accurately and consistently wear safety gear and follow safety guidelines.
- Perform maintenance activities, of which includes digging holes for posts, running tracer wires, placing ground rods, and removing and replacing marker signs.
- Responds to after-hours emergency situations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience
Requires a High School Diploma or GED equivalent, supplemented by a minimum of 1 year of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid Driver's License issued by the State of Oklahoma for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. Possession of or ability to readily obtain an ODEQ Class D Water License within 6 months of employment is required.
Physical Requirements
Tasks involve the ability to exert moderate physical effort in medium work, typically involving some combination of balancing, climbing, feeling, handling, hearing, kneeling, mental acuity, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, talking, visual acuity, walking and which involves some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (up to 50 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.
