Location: 1010 City Attorney
Pay Grade: A09
FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Under general supervision of the City Attorney or designee, provides assistance to the attorneys for the City of Broken Arrow.

Essential Job Functions

  • Responds to phone calls and correspondence from citizens, co-workers, outside counsel, and other governmental agencies; determines the nature of inquiries; provides information to attorneys for answers, opinions, or recommendations.
  • Responds to citizen's inquiries regarding the filing of a tort claim the status of a claim, or the disposition of a claim.
  • Receives new tort claims; enters information into the database and files; calculates and dockets response dates; researches and assembles information from various departmental records to aid in the resolution of tort claims; drafts letters, documents, and reports for the disposition of the claim.
  • Maintains attorney's litigation files and calendars.
  • Drafts confidential and specialized pleadings, discovery documents, internal memoranda, letters, and other papers for specific assignments or cases.
  • Assists attorneys with preparation of discovery, hearings and depositions.
  • Coordinates witnesses, attorneys, and other necessary personnel for depositions and prepares subpoenas.
  • Prepares and compiles exhibits for pleadings, depositions, and trials.
  • Requests, reviews, and assembles litigant's medical records pertaining to their claim or lawsuit.
  • Prepares trial and witness notebooks.
  • Responsible for docketing response dates and other related due dates for tort claims and litigation.
  • Files documents in the Court Clerk's office.
  • Compiles and verifies information to aid in the preparation of reports, charts, or tables.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience

Requires a High School Diploma or GED equivalent, supplemented by a minimum of one year of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Paralegal Certification or degree preferred. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid Driver's License issued by the State of Oklahoma for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

Physical Requirements

Tasks involve the ability to exert minimal physical effort in sedentary work, typically involving some combination of balancing, crouching, feeling, handling, hearing, kneeling, mental acuity, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, talking, visual acuity, walking and which involves some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (up to 10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.
